1. What is Brief Therapy?

Psychiatrists and Psychologists have a secret they don't publicize very much: Nobody knows why people do the things they do. It has been documented that there are some 350 major "schools" of therapy and many competing theories about why we do what we do, yet there is not a general consensus as to which theory is right. Change rarely occurs just as a result of insight or by getting in touch with your feelings, as traditional therapeutic approaches suggest.
Brief or solution-focused therapy is focused on clear, achievable goals. Rather than looking for explanations in the past or focusing on what you don't want, we focus on helping you achieve what you do want as quickly and directly as possible. Solution-focused therapy emphasizes people's strengths and inner resources, bypasses a lot of analysis and gives people concrete ways of changing their actions and their points of view. Solution-focused therapy is effective in dealing with a wide range of emotional problems such as depression, anxiety, phobias, stress, anger and relationship problems.

2. What is rational emotive behavior therapy?

As a Licensed Professional Counselor, David Mortellaro has earned an advanced certificate in rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT). REBT is a practical action-oriented approach to solving emotional and behavioral problems. REBT focuses on the present: on changing currently-held attitudes and maladaptive behaviors that cause emotional pain. REBT stresses solutions, not just insight, and emphasizes your power to choose and implement satisfying alternatives to current difficulties. REBT is effective for dealing with a wide range of emotional problems such as depression, anxiety, phobias, stress, anger and relationship problems. Because most problems can be dealt with fairly quickly and most health insurance policies cover psychotherapy, it doesn't result in a drain on finances, REBT can be applied to many life situations and the results can be rapid, effective and life enhancing.

3. When is marriage counseling needed?

Most couples can solve moderate-level problems themselves or with the supportive help of friends, family, or a minister. Yet, if you continually feel overwhelmed by serious persistent problems that seem to have no resolution, then professional help may be needed. The following are some indications that a couple should consider seeing a counselor:
  • Alcohol or drug dependency is part of the problem
  • Verbal or emotional abuse exists
  • You or your mate now have serious emotional or personal problems that seem to be caused by
marital difficulties or are causing marital difficulties
  • Persistent appetite or sleep disturbances
  • Sexual difficulties have become a serious strain in your relationship
  • One of you is having or has recently had an extramarital affair
  • One of you has contacted a lawyer
  • Personal or marital tensions are increasing rapidly
If you or your spouse identified with the above, please consider seeing a Licensed Professional Counselor. Counseling helps many couples save their marriage and keep their family together.

4. Don't you need to have severe problems to need counseling?

No. All of us experience difficult situations in our lives for which we could use help or "wise counsel," such as marital difficulties, .parenting problems, grief, stress, etc. Professional counselors are experienced in and committed to helping people become stronger and better equipped to solve their own problems.
